I can imagine the frustration a whole lot of people go through during a traffic jam. The thought of staying several hours on a particular spot in the middle of the road already sounds scary to me.

Well, if other transport companies are doing virtually nothing about it, you don’t expect the leaders of the sector, Uber to remain silent. They have to prove they are actually leaders right?

In a bid to stop or maybe reduce this (I wouldn’t know if that is their intent though), Uber has a plan to launch a fleet of electric aircraft for on-demand aviation. The plan, called Uber Elevate, is set to design these ‘cars’ to take off and land vertically, travel 100 miles on a single charge and has set 2021 as the due date.

To achieve this, the company just hired NASA engineer Mark Moore. Mark Moore worked at the federal agency as an advanced aircraft engineer and basically kickstarted the current interest in vertical take-off and landing craft for short-haul urban flight with a 2010 paper on the feasibility of the helicopter-like vehicles.

“I can’t think of another company in a stronger position to be the leader for this new ecosystem and make the urban electric VTOL market real,” he says.

Moore added that his decision to join Uber was that the company seemed to have a practical business case for making a flying commuter transit service real – and nothing would ever get done without market motivation behind the vision.

I seem to admire the creativeness of Uber in this transport sector. They are willing to transform the sector entirely and they are doing it in a surely creative way. With the recent launch of UberHIRE in India, it seems sure that the Uber team is an extremely creative one.
