Tecno, the leading mobile phone OEM in Nigeria, a few weeks ago announced the latest smartphone in its range of devices, the Camon C8. This makes the Camon C8 the latest model in the Camon C series of which the C5 was the last before this latest upgrade.

The Camon C8 is mostly marketed and pitched as a phone that has everything one needs in a camera smart phone. For a mid-range smart phone, that is a bold statement to make. First let’s look at the specifications.

Unlike the C5 that has an all plastic body, the Camon C8 has a metal frame around the body with a plastic cover, giving it a more glossy stylish look. The 5.5 inch display is powered by a quad-core 1.3GHZ mediatek chipset processor, with an internal memory of 16GB ( expandable up to 32GB using and an external SD storage card) and 1GB dedicated as the RAM. This is not bad for a mid-range phone. But it seems a 1GB RAM is the base standard for all devices of this level. The Camon C8 also comes with dual sim capability. The operating system is the latest Android os in the market, the lollipop 5.0.

The Camera

Since Tecno is touting the Camon C8 as the ultimate camera smartphone in the market, it is only right to look a little bit indepth at the camera specs of the phone. The device has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera with dual LED light. This is interesting since even the high-end smartphones have only a single LED. The dual LED is suppose to ensure high quality pictures in low light situations.

A further look at the camera specs show that Tecno is trying to match their words with action. The Camon C8 features an F/2.0 aperture rating. This rating is generally the notation used to indicate the size of the diaphragm opening or aperture in a camera. The rating doesn’t make sense if you don’t understand what it stands for or how it compares to other devices. The F/ aperture rating is the focal point rating of the lens/aperture ratio and is a representation of the amount of light that the lens allows to pass through it. The lower the rating, the higher the amount of light that passes through the lens . To put it in more graphic terms, the iPhone 6 has an aperture rating of F/2.2, which means at F/2.0, the Camon C8 has a better camera than the iPhone 6 especially in low-light conditions. Impressive right?

Battery and Display

There is a trend these days of featuring non-removeable battery in smart phones. Whatever the advantages of it, I don’t like it and sure most Nigerians don’t too. We need to be able to buy replacement/extra battery because of the power situation in the country. Having said that, I must admit the 3000mAh capacity of the non-removeable battery in the Camon C8 is very impressive. That should mean longer intervals between charging, which invariably is a good thing for the health of the battery. But at the same time,  the AMOLED wide-screen display should be a factor in how the battery performs. It is generally known that MTK chipsets consume too much power from the battery and with an HD IPS display, it would be really interesting to see how that works out in terms of how long a fully charged battery last.

On the tecno Facebook page, the quoted price for the Camon C8 is 27,000 naira. Considering the specs and all,  this is not bad. So once again, Tecno is doing what they know best, making awesome phones at a cheap price.

Consumers are waiting with baited breath to buy and test the Camon C8.
