Boom J8

I am a passionate writer with a keen nose for the news and stories that matter. Sit back, relax and enjoy the tech ride with me as I take you into my own version of all things techie

To usher in the new quarter, Tecno launched the new Boom J8 last week at an event in Lagos. From the name, it is clear the phone is the successor to the Boom J7. One reason I like Tecno is, when a phone is launched, you know it becomes immediately available for purchase in Nigeria. And so it is with the Boom J8.

Boom J8

What better way to launch a music-centric phone than to spice the occasion with some of the countries household names in the entertainment industry. Though I felt Tecno should have done better by inviting trending artists instead of Rugged Man and Weird MC amongst others. Anyhow, This is the sort of smartphone launch some people would attend to hopefully, listen to live music from the invited artists.

So what does the Boom J8 offer to the public to make it stand out from others? We know Boom J8 is not a flagship device. That is restricted to the Phantom series. In which case, the Boom J8 would be a mid-range budget phone, unlikely to have the burden of a huge price tag around it.

Lets take a quick look at the specifications.

Though the Android 6, Marshmallow, is the rave now for all new phones, Tecno decided to go with Android 5.1, Lollipop, operating system. However, the user experience should be different because the interface is Tecno’s own unique HiOS. But tech nerds won’t be impressed if the phone cannot be upgraded to the latest Android OS.

Under the hood, the Boom J8 has a MediaTek 6753 chipset ably supporting a 64 bit CPU clocked at a decent 1.3 GHz. A Mali-T720 GPU is also mounted on the chipset to handle the Graphics. Another upgrade from the J7 is the 2GB RAM on the Boom J8. And with an internal storage storage of 16GB, expandable to 128GB, the J8 promises to give users a wonderful mobile experience.

Boom J8The display and dimensions are all part of the wonderful experience the Boom J8 promises. Though disappointingly plastic, the ultra slim, sleek smartphone comes with an impressive IPS HD display. Still talking impressive, the display size is a whooping 5.5 inch with a display resolution of 720×1280 pixels. I guess some might be a bit disappointed that the Boom J8 is not a 1080p smartphone. I won’t worry though. There is no noticeable difference between 720p resolution and a 1080p.

The camera of the Boom J8 also got an upgrade from the J7. While the J7 came with an 8MP primary shooter, the Boom J8 has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera with geo-tagging features and LED flash.

With the Boom J8, Tecno decided on a plastic unibody design. That would pose a problem for people who like swapping batteries. It means the 3000mAh battery is sealed inside the plastic body of the phone.

As initially stated, the Boom J8 is a phone designed for music lovers. I guess in the way the Camon C8 was designed people who love taking photos. To help buyers out on their way to an awesome sound experience, a Boom Headset is included as an accessory when you buy the phone.

The handset is available both on online stores and offline retail shops for between 41,000 and 45,000 depending on your location in the country.
