Electric power supply inadequacy is not a new term anymore at least for Nigerians; it has always been an issue and is still a major concern with several of our political leaders claiming to solve this problem of pitch darkness to no avail. Kilowatts of power supply keeps dropping year in year out and people just resolve to alternate power supply in solar generators, cells, and solar converters, but of course, these other options are costly and cannot be afforded by everyone.

Africa at large suffers from an inadequate power supply. So imagine the damage done to the environment by fume and carbon dioxide released from mechanical generators which are the next affordable option.

Renewable energy is growing steadily but it is costly to install solar power supply to augment the general power.


Solstice is an energy solution for homes now, Solstice was one of the winners of the year 2016’s DEMO Africa and it operates by making use of data’s to help Nigerian homes provide an efficient, clean, reliable and money-saving energy solution.

Co-founders Ugwem Eneyo and Cole Stites- Clayton are both Stanford university graduates of an engineering program; they developed software and tools to help give homes clean energy solutions. Ugewem already aware about the challenges of power supply to homes said: “From experience, I argued that developing platforms and tools for their unique context could be valuable, if not more so relative to the energy challenges Californian homes face.”

After working months with teams from Stanford innovation, Silicon Valley and other people with African local Knowledge. Ugwem and Cole developed a solstice eBox.

The ebox is made of a combination of hardware and software working together to allow homes efficiently use and monitor energy sourced from the National grid and private generators. The ebox provides a transparent way to integrate solar and battery technology into house power supply. This is non-invasive and easy to setup.


The Solstice ebox is not supposed to replace power supply from the general grid according to Ugwem, “Taking homes off-grid is not always the most optimal solution, and for many of our urban homes, isn’t the solution. Instead, we focus on hybrid systems that are better designed and easier managed with our technology, which can work with or without solar technology.”

Ugwem said, “We have exciting plans regarding what we can do with not only the data, but also being in the palms of up to millions of Nigerian homes.

Solstice is presently funded by Stanford’s Tomkat Center for Sustainable Energy and hope to be officially out in 2017.
