The Lagos edition of the United Nations (UN) Influx Global Hackathon has seen Smart Transit emerge as the winner. Smart Transit is an African transport-based startup that’s putting together a fully integrated transport system in Africa.

The Influx Global Hackathon hosted by UK Charity organization, Influx Trust was announced earlier this year. The aim of the hackathon is to bring together the best minds in the area of innovation to hack based on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Across five continents, 9 regions witnessed the hackathon event. The hackathon event in these 9 regions focused on 3 SDGs. Lagos edition of the hackathon event was centered on the SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure). Lagos stood as the only African city that partook in the event; the event lasted for 3 days. The event took place in Ford Foundation, Ikoyi.
Several innovators and developers were chosen to be participants in the event; these participants were chosen after the application phase. Afterwards, 12 teams were formed and given the role of pointing out real problems in their various community and come up with solutions that will put these problems to bed.
Hotel.ng’s founder Mark Essien, Opeyemi Awoyemi and Jobberman’s co-founder were among the panel of the judges for the hackathon edition in Lagos.
Smart Transit was named champion by the panel of judges. Smart Transit is poised to enhance Africa’s – most notably Nigeria- transport system using a data-driven Integrated Transport System.
As a result of the win, Smart Transit will get support and resources from the United Nations to perfect, test and scale their brilliant ideas into sustainable businesses. Not just Smart Transit, but also other winners from the remaining 8 regions will pitch their solutions before the United Nations headquarters in New York by June.
Smart Transit supplies transport data and perceptive analytics to the Government with the purpose of improving policy direction for an infrastructural development that’ll remain sustainable. Another impact of Smart Transit is that travel experience of commuters will be bettered as commuters will be able to get access to updated information on travel fares, times and routes through mobile app or the web.
