The resurrection of Nokia seems to have a lot in store for the mobile phone world. Nokia and Xiaomi, another smartphone manufacturer have entered into a collaboration agreement and a multi-year patent agreement. As a result of this agreement, Nokia and Xiaomi will be able to make use of each other’s cross-license cellular standard essential patents.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Nokia takes patenting very serious. For the uninitiated, few months ago, Nokia patented its Nokia 6 smartphone design. The move to patent the design came as a surprise to everyone because no one was expecting a an OEM that’s trying to make a comeback make a business move of that magnitude. Well, it seems they had a foresight of this in mind when they made the move.

“Xiaomi is one of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with them,” said Rajeev Suri, President & CEO of Nokia.

He continued, “In addition to welcoming such a prominent global technology company to our family of patent licensees, we look forward to working together on a wide range of strategic projects.”

Along with the multi-patent agreement, Xiaomi has fully acquired some patent assets. The business agreement will see Nokia providing basic network infrastructure equipments and low power requirements to Xiaomi. The deal will also see the two OEMs combining in exploring fields like Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
