HMD Global, the company which has the license for producing Nokia phones for some more years to come has patented the design of the NOKIA 6 smartphone. This, they might have done because of its widespread popularity and acceptance by the smartphone industry. Recall that upon release, the Nokia 6 smartphone sold out in less than a minute.

While wondering why HMD Global patented this design, it came to my understanding that if I was in their shoes, I would have done the exact same, maybe even sometime earlier than they did.

The Nokia 6 device has gotten too popular and accepted to an extent that one has to harbor the fear of some copy cat companies using its design to get their own customer base. However, that’s not going to happen now, as HMD Global has just blocked every means to copy or use the smartphone’s design.

The document was filed on November 18th and was approved just two days ago by EUIPO (the European Union Intellectual Property Office), which on another note, leaves me to wonder if HMD Global had envisaged such popularity and acceptability for the Nokia 6. If they had, then I must note that they did their homework excellently.

The Nokia 6 was unveiled in January exclusively for the Chinese market. The handset sold quickly right off the bat. As a result, the phone will have a global release some time next quarter. A special edition will feature a glossy piano black rear cover.

So when the device is released in Nigeria, I’m very sure it will just like the global, receive a whole lot of accolade, acceptability and patronage from Nigerians and Africans in general. Normally, Nigerians are well known from time past for their love for Nokia phones which dominated for some ten years and above (see NOKIA 3310). I’m not sure the Nokia 6 would have a problem repeating such a feat.

Well, while we are, if you’ve been looking for how to steal the Nokia 6 design, look no more, it has been patented. Thumbs up HMD.
