As expected and right on cue, Xiaomi finally launch its new smartphone, MI Max. It is now official that Xiaomi is of the opinion that our pair of Jeans have huge front pockets. Recall that when Xiaomi teased an image of the Mi Max, it was in a front pocket of a jeans. Leading people like me to speculate that a 6.4″ smartphone cannot fit comfortably in the front pocket of a pair of jeans. And that perhaps, the ‘Max’ in the name might refer to something else, like the battery for instance.
As far as the battery goes, MI Max sports a 4850mAH battery. Well that should also qualify as a sort of ‘max’ if you compare it to some flagships sporting a battery of just 3000mAh or less. According to Xiaomi, the battery can support about 14 hours of streaming videos online from a single full charge. That is very impressive anyhow you look at it.
At 6.4″, the Mi Max is the biggest smartphone so far released this year. Even the Le Max 2 with its 6GB of RAM is not up to that. And talking about what is under the hood, the Mi Max would be shipped out in three different models based on the chipset, internal storage and RAM. One model will spot Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 650 while the other will be the Snapdragon 632. The top level model would have a RAM of 4GB and 128 GB of internal space to store all sorts of files like photos videos and your favorite ebooks.
The Mi Max also has an updated version of Xiaomi’s custom operating system, the MIUI 8. The Operating system is based on Android and already has over 200 million people using it. This is clear prove that Xiaomi fans number in their hundreds of millions. And this is linked to the fact that Xiaomi make smartphones to rival the best. One cool feature of the updated UI is the ability to clone apps. This is relevant for people who need to have multiple accounts in the same phone. It would be therefore easier to have multiple accounts or profiles on the Mi Max on social networking sites like Instagram or Snapchat. Nice feature I must say.
Other features in this thin 7.5mm phablet include a 16MP and 8MP rear and front camera respectively and fingerprint sensor. All these at a relatively modest price of about $230. That is for the lower spec version with its 32GB of internal storage and 3GB RAM. The top 4GB RAM and an internal storage of 128 GB will set you back just $307. In between these two is another model of 64GB with 3GB of RAM. That costs about $261.
From the price and specs, it is clear that Xiaomi did not intend the Mi Max to be a flagship device. Xiaomi’s flagship still remains the Mi 5 which was announced at the Mobile World Congress earlier in the year.
