Following the business deal that Google closed with HTC over its hardware business, bringing in a total of 2000 chip and integrated circuit designers, Google has begun plans to produce its own CPU and hardware for smartphones. This smart move is to enable them to have more control over the production of the hardware, which will give the company room to control the smartphones and other devices that are being produced, and also give them a better stand at competing with Apple in the production of high-end smartphones.
This smart move was birthed from the lesson learnt from previous failed attempts especially with the recent Pixel 2 smartphone, and also the Nexus devices. Previously, Google has employed the help of HTC, LG, Samsung, and others to design and produce its Nexus and Pixel smartphones, while it just simply maintained the development of the Android software. As of today, the company has announced that it’s working on the new custom hardware after it has developed the imaging processor embedded in the Pixel 2 in-house. The just Concluded HTC deal will further boost the com[pany’s internal electronics engineering capabilities.
Google seems to be considering to delve into the production of its own hardware for virtual/augmented reality headsets and artificial intelligence-based systems, although HTC has its own lead in the VR headset market. Meanwhile, Apple has already kicked out the iPhone with ARM-based microprocessors designed in-house and recently added graphics processing capabilities (a development that actually cost the main graphics processing technology supplier, Imagination Technologies, so much.
Looking at developing its own SoCs, it will be requiring significant investment, and will also mean that the devices will be more popular than the company’s Pixel and Pixel 2 devices.
Previously, Google has manufactured the Pixel Visual core ( a custom chip that works in a similar way to Apple’s A11 Bionic and Samsung’s Exynos 8895), but the future SoC from the company would be more powerful than the last ones. If Google decides to go down this line, it would be saving a whole lot of money and time in releasing hardware-making chores to the likes of Qualcomm, and it will also be in total control of security and software patches.
