Since the confirmation of the company working on autonomous systems for cars, detailed have only trickled out alongside a few public sightings of the technology but thanks to the co-founder of the self-driving car start up the project is becoming a reality and common place.
Apple is testing out it’s Autonomous car technology. MacCallister Higgins who is Co – Founder of the self car driving start up said in his Tweet that “Apple’s self-driving cars have a new array of sensors”. According to a video, Apple has a new array of sensors with which it’s equipping its fleet of self-driving cars.
The sensor rack spotted in Higgins’ video is covered in Apple-style white plastic, and sports a lot of different sensors, including six Velodyne Lidar sensors, according to his tweets.
He said that it looks like the Velodyne sensors only can capture 280-degrees of data, instead of the full 360-degrees they can capture when set up differently on other cars.
In 2016, Apple reportedly drastically scaled back its car ambitions, codenamed “Project Titan,” from building a complete vehicle to focusing on the self-driving component.
MacCallister Higgins also noted a few other things interesting about the Apple test car. For one, most of the compute stack on Apple’s car is located on the roof, unlike many other self-driving test cars that usually load it all into the trunk.
The Apple car also has six light ranging and detection radar units, called LiDAR, which is basically a camera that sees depth. LiDAR is considered by many an essential piece of technology needed to safely deploy self-driving cars en masse.
A New York Times report in August said Apple was going to test its autonomous vehicle technology in a shuttle that transports the company’s employees between buildings on its campus. The report said the shuttle will most likely come from an established car manufacturer, rather than being a wholly in-house creation.
