News Feed Only Posts Is Being Tested By Facebook

Facebook’s News Feed is now going to get the respect it deserves. Facebook is experimenting with a feature that let users post directly to News feed. Basically, what this means is that there are now two ways of updating your status on Facebook. The normal status updates that appears on ones timeline. And a News feed-only update that appears on the News Feed. Before now, News feeds items are generated automatically. A direct product of your Facebook friends’ activities on their own account.

News Feed to Look Like Twitter

The thing about this new feature is that it sorts of looks like how tweets appear on Twitter. As new News Feeds appear, the earlier ones get pushed down until they disappear entirely from view. And the good thing for many people is that posts on News Feed do not appear on your timeline. So the posts are only temporary. However, the News Feed posts would still be visible to you alone when you check your profile page. Another way of seeing the posts is by using the search feature on Facebook.

Giving Facebook Search a Boost

Talking about Facebook search, this new feature could be another way to make Facebook search more popular. It was only recently that the search feature in Facebook was upgraded to make it more holistic. In the sense that, people should be able the use Facebook search the way they use a normal search engine like Google and Bing. Before the upgrade, people tend to use Facebook search to find friends and Facebook pages only. Unfortunately, using Facebook search as a normal search engine is still to gain traction. It has never crossed my mind to search for stuff on Facebook. Google is still my go-to search engine. So this new update might just be another reason to make Facebook search more useful.

News Feed-Only Feature Still Under Test

news feedThe feature though is not available to all Facebook users. CNET it was that spotted the feature and quickly made a note of it including taking a screenshot. According to them, posting to News feed is from the normal status update box. To post on it, just type normally. A new check box showing ‘Hide From Your Timeline‘ will pop out. Checking the box would post the status directly on your News Feed. This new update won’t appear on the Timeline. The feature though is on a ‘as you post‘ basis. That is, it is not enabled permanently. So anytime you wish to post on News feed, you have to go through the process of enabling it by checking the appropriate box again. Timeline update is still the default.

However, if you want the share interesting posts from the News feed, the new feature that hides your post from your timeline is not part of the options available to you. The options are still as they were before.

No official statement has being released yet by Facebook about the feature. This is not surprising. The feature is still being tested in a limited capacity. And it is not certain it would become a permanent feature after the test. But Facebook released this statement in reply to Engadget’s query about it:

The Timeline on your profile is a great place to see a comprehensive history of your Facebook posts. We’ve heard feedback that sometimes, you may want to share a post with friends and family via News Feed and not have that post be displayed on your Timeline. The ability to hide a post from your Timeline already exists, and today we’re testing a feature that would make it even easier to control where your posts live by giving you the option to publish a post only to News Feed and not to your Timeline”
