A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backuppower supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and various security devices. Large data centers are industrial scale operations using as much electricity as a small town.
A custom-built data center with substantially reduced (“38% less”)power consumption compared to existing Facebook data centers opened in April 2011 in Prineville, Oregon. In April 2012, Facebook opened a second data center in Forest City, North Carolina, US. In June 2013, Facebook opened a third data center in Luleå, Sweden. In November 2014, Facebook opened a fourth data center inAltoona, Iowa, US.
Opening of data centers went on and on and now, Facebook has opened a seventh data center.
Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg today announced the unveiling of Facebook’s 7th data center. In a Post on His official Facebook page, Mark wrote “I’m excited to share that Facebook’s 7th data center — powered by 100% renewable energy — will be in Los Lunas, New Mexico here in the United States.Data centers deliver all of Facebook’s services to you. They’re some of the most complex machines ever created. The Los Lunas Data Center will be one of the most advanced and energy-efficient data centers in the world. We’re glad to be investing in New Mexico, to become part of the Los Lunas community, and to continue building the massive infrastructure that connects our global community.
On October 1, 2012, CEO Zuckerberg visited Moscow to stimulate social media innovation in Russia and to boost Facebook’s position in the Russian market. Russia’s communications minister tweeted that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev urged the social media giant’s founder to abandon plans to lure away Russian programmers and instead consider opening a research center in Moscow. Facebook has roughly 9 million users in Russia, while domestic analogue VK has around 34 million.
This above brings me to my big question, ‘With the population of Facebook users in Nigeria, why is there no data center here yet’? I am sure expecting a reply from Zuck, though if any of you techies can help him out, I’ll be glad.
